LAKE JACKSON, Texas — Family members, friends, and community members are mourning the tragic loss of John Mendoza Jr., who passed away at the age of 18 following an officer-involved shooting during the early morning hours of Monday in Lake Jackson.

According to officials, the incident began at approximately 12:09 a.m. when a deputy with the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop near FM 2004 and This Way Street. Authorities stated that the vehicle did not stop, leading to a brief pursuit.

The pursuit came to an end when the vehicle entered the attached garage of a residence on Indian Warrior Trail. Officials reported that after the deputy encountered the driver, later identified as John Mendoza Jr., the deputy discharged his weapon.

Mendoza sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Additional details surrounding the events leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.

Family attorney Charles Adams stated that John had spent part of the evening playing basketball with two friends. According to Adams, the group later returned to a friend’s home before deciding to walk at a nearby track. Adams further stated that the teenagers believed they were being watched by law enforcement and eventually left the area in John’s vehicle prior to the traffic stop.

As required by department policy, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of multiple investigations.

The Texas Rangers, the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, and the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office are conducting ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding John’s death. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the reason for the initial traffic stop, nor have they released additional details regarding the moments immediately preceding the shooting.
