NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Four individuals were arrested early Sunday morning following a large disturbance involving more than 75 people in downtown New Bedford, according to local police.
The incident began shortly after 2:00 a.m. as New Bedford Police officers were monitoring the Pleasant Street area while patrons exited downtown bars and restaurants. Officers were working to help crowds disperse safely when they noticed Bento’s Bar & Grill still occupied by customers after the city’s closing time.
Police said officers spoke with management regarding the need to clear patrons from the establishment. Around the same time, multiple fights broke out among a large group gathered nearby, creating a rapidly escalating disturbance.
According to authorities, officers attempted to separate those involved and disperse the crowd. However, the situation intensified as additional individuals joined the disorder, prompting officers to request assistance from all available units.
Mutual aid agencies responded to assist, including the Massachusetts State Police and police departments from Acushnet, Fairhaven, and Dartmouth.
During the course of the disturbance, officers recovered a loaded firearm from one individual and a knife from another. Several officers were reportedly assaulted while attempting to restore order.
The following individuals were arrested in connection with the incident:
- Devian Hernandez, 25, of Fall River, charged with disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct.
- Sajiah Arnum, 26, of New Bedford, charged with disorderly conduct.
- Robert Lopes, 43, of New Bedford, charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disturbing the peace, and disorderly conduct.
- Elijah Raymond, 22, of New Bedford, charged with disturbing the peace, carrying a dangerous weapon, disturbing the peace while armed, and disorderly conduct.
Police noted that Raymond possessed a valid Massachusetts license to carry firearms at the time of his arrest. Authorities stated that his license is currently under review as a result of the incident.
Two officers were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment following the altercation. Officials reported that no serious injuries were sustained by responding officers or members of the public.
As a result of the incident, the New Bedford Police Department confirmed that a report regarding Bento’s Bar & Grill will be submitted to the city’s Licensing Board for review.
The department commended responding officers, assisting law enforcement agencies, and communications personnel for their professionalism and coordinated efforts in bringing the situation under control.
The investigation remains ongoing.
