MUSCATINE, Iowa — Authorities have identified 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland as the gunman in a tragic murder-suicide that left six people dead across multiple locations in Muscatine on June 1, 2026.
According to the Muscatine Police Department, officers initially responded to reports of a shooting at a residence on Park Avenue. Upon arrival, investigators discovered four individuals deceased inside the home, all suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
As the investigation unfolded, police located two additional victims at separate locations on Mill Street and Grandview Avenue. Both victims had sustained fatal gunshot injuries and were pronounced dead.
Investigators identified Ryan McFarland as the suspected shooter and launched an extensive search. Authorities later located him on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures; however, McFarland was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate the shootings stemmed from a domestic dispute. Police have stated that all of the victims are believed to be family members of McFarland. One of the victims has been identified as his wife, Lesa McFarland.
The tragedy has deeply affected the Muscatine community and local schools. The Muscatine Community School District confirmed that two employees and two students were among those killed in the incident, bringing additional grief to students, staff, families, and community members.
In the aftermath of the shootings, residents have expressed shock and sorrow as they struggle to comprehend the scale of the loss. Community leaders, educators, and counselors have begun providing support services to those impacted by the tragedy.
