The Illinois Tollway community and residents across the Chicago area are mourning the tragic loss of Calvin L. Holley, 52, of Chicago, who was killed while performing roadway maintenance work early Saturday morning on Interstate 294 in Des Plaines.

According to authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 4:26 a.m. near milepost 41.5 on the southbound Tri-State Tollway. Holley and two fellow Illinois Tollway maintenance workers were conducting pothole repair operations when they were struck by a vehicle.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Holley was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries. The two other workers were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been publicly released.

The Illinois State Police are leading the investigation into the crash. Southbound lanes of I-294 between Dempster Street and Touhy Avenue were closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene. The roadway reopened shortly before noon.

Holley had served as an equipment operator and laborer with the Illinois Tollway for two years. In a statement, the agency described him as a respected and valued member of its workforce.

“Our equipment operator/laborers work on the front line of our roadway system, maintaining safe travel conditions and assisting motorists in need,” the Illinois Tollway said. “Calvin was carrying out these duties when he tragically lost his life.”

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also expressed condolences, calling the incident heartbreaking and urging motorists to remember the importance of work zone safety.

“May his memory be a blessing,” the governor said. “Let us also remember to slow down and keep our roadway workers safe.”

Holley’s death has deeply affected coworkers, family members, and friends who remember him as a hardworking and dedicated individual committed to serving the public. Those who knew him describe a man who took pride in his work and understood the importance of keeping Illinois roads safe for others.

The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by road maintenance workers every day. Transportation officials continue to urge drivers to obey Illinois’ Move Over Law, reduce speed in work zones, and remain alert when approaching emergency and maintenance crews.

As investigations continue, family, friends, and colleagues are left mourning the loss of a man whose work often went unnoticed but whose contributions benefited countless motorists throughout the region.

Calvin L. Holley will be remembered for his dedication, service, and commitment to keeping others safe. His loss leaves a lasting void within the Illinois Tollway family and the community he served.

Rest in peace, Calvin L. Holley.
